Sunday Sundae is my bi-monthly Sunday treat to you, where I’ll share what I’m reading, teaching/learning, wearing, watching - and what’s bringing me joy.
I’m writing to you from a sunny spot on my couch, with our two cats nearby and my foot propped up after dropping a ceramic vase on it. The school year has started, so I’m excited to share my favorite historical info and fun facts in the coming newsletters from the lessons we’re working on!
Reading:
My mom lent me a fiction book, Night Circus. I rarely read fiction but when I do, it is a delicious treat to be able to read through without taking notes, highlighting, or re-reading for clarification. I made it through all 490 pages in less than two days. I would recommend this book if you enjoy the circus and whimsical stories.
Watching:
The Decameron (Netflix) - I thought this might be a fun and possibly insightful show for learning more about medieval Europe and the plague. It was not what I expected and the goal was definitely not historical accuracy, but I appreciated how creatively the show highlighted the absurdity of feudalism and social classes, and this part felt highly relevant. The characters were fun and multi-dimensional, there was drama, intrigue, romance, and I even cried once. Have you seen it?
Wearing:
I love the handmade linen pieces from Ersa Fibers, but they’re out of my price range. I was thrilled when the Ersa top I’ve always dreamed of popped up for an affordable price on Depop! If I were buying it new, I would’ve opted for a size up, but this one fits and the price was awesome! Can’t wait to style it for work soon and dress it up!
What brought me joy in the past two weeks:
Last Friday, we made it out to support the finale show for Miami Girls Rock Camp and our friends who volunteer with the organization. The show was awesome and the organization is so cool! MGRC promotes self esteem for young girls and non binary youth, and teaches instruments and song writing so they can put on an original performance for a live audience at the end of camp.
Lots of cuddle time with the cats.
Drew and I had a nice beach evening and swim last week.
Wednesday was my last official day of summer, so I spent a solo morning at the beach swimming, the water was cool and refreshing. It was also so clear, and I could see the fish swimming around my feet. Mornings that begin in the ocean are always my favorite mornings.
Although I wasn’t ready to head back to work, it was nice to see some of my work friends. I also won’t have a classroom for the first few weeks while school construction continues, but I WILL have a wall of windows for the first time in a classroom and just knowing that in a month’s time I will have natural light and see the weather each day is a huge win for my mental health.
Drew was able to meet some of my dad’s family for the first time when my aunt and uncle were visiting, as well as some of my cousins!
My school photo this year turned out cute! It may be my favorite one since my first or second year of teaching.
I hope your week was sprinkled with joyful moments, feel free to comment and share one of yours! I hope the weeks to come bring you moments of peace, clarity, connection, and community.
Thank you for being here,
Dana
